It’s getting cold outside – and dull, dry hair is not a good look! But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered to keep your hair shining & healthy throughout the harsh winter months. Here are the do’s and don’ts to staying on top when it comes to caring for your hair in the wintertime.

DO:

  1. Commit to using hair masks to keep hair hydrated
Hair masks are a great way to maintain hydrated locks. We recommend using the Keratinworks Stabilizing Mask. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse! Repeat a couple of times a month or as often as needed. Your hair is extra dry? Leave it in for up to 60 min for a superboost.
  2. Shampoo less often to help with dry scalp
Does your scalp get itchy during winter time? You’re not alone: the cold weather tends to have drying effects on most skin types. Try to cut down on the amount of times you shampoo in a week to help keep the itching at a minimum! Try our Keratinworks Post-Keratin Shampoo. This shampoo is designed to clean and hydrate without using harsh chemicals (no sulfates, no parabens, no sodiums). It also contains proteins and natural nutrients to hydrate and protect your hair from the harsh, cold dry winter.
  3. Use leave-in conditioner to combat static
With dryer hair comes more static. The best way to prevent looking like a Christmas tree is to use a leave in conditioner to lock in the moisture.
  4. Opt for a darker hair color this winter
We’ve said it, and we’ll say it again! Winter air = dryer hair. This is why maybe sticking to a darker color that does not require bleaching the hair may be a more suitable option this winter.
  5. Pick the right winter hat
Winter hats are cute, but not when they damage your hair. Coarser fabrics can split ends and cause breakage. SELF Magazine recommends going DIY and lining your hat with silk or satin.

DON’T

  1. Go outside with wet hair
We get it – blow drying your hair sometimes feels like it takes forever – but in the harsh weather your strands can freeze and cause breakage. SO not worth it.  Did you know? Keratinworks Smoothing Treatment cuts blow dry time by ⅓ and even more in some cases! So you can spend more time taking the snow off your car in the morning (we’re dreading it too).
  2. Be scared to try new hairstyles!
Just because it’s miserable out doesn’t mean your hair has to be – have fun this winter and try some new styles. Follow our Pinterest account for some inspiration.
  3. Use too many alcohol-based products
Alcohol is an ingredient used in products to help them dry faster and maintain shape. However, the drying effect may not be desirable in the winter, when your strands are already losing most of their moisture.
  4. Use super hot water to wash your hair
Although it may be tempting to turn up the heat on these cold winter days, hot water actually strips the hair of its natural oils. Try lukewarm water to avoid this! At the end of your shower, try giving your hair a 20 second cool shot of water to close up those cuticles.
  5. Go heavy on the heat-styling
As we all know, heat tools can make your hair look great short term – but have adverse effects long-term. Try to limit the heat-styling this winter, and use heat protectant spray on the days that you do.

And that’s everything you need to know about keeping your hair healthy this winter!
